The Cat Litter Conundrum

February 11th, 2013

Ah, cat litter. If you’ve got a cat, you’ll probably need it. Cats, being the demanding creatures they are, like to have somewhere acceptable to them to answer the calls of nature, and a properly equipped and situated litter tray is a tick in the box for even the fussiest of felines.

When deciding which cat litter to use, you’ll be confronted with a scary selection of choices, including crystals, mineral dust and granules, sands, wood chips and pellets, paper pulp, corn granules, silica gel, and diamond coated fairy dust… well, maybe not the last one, but it may as well be!

The Cat Litter Palava

Clumping vs. Non-Clumping
What does it mean to have a clumping cat litter? Well, a cat litter that clumps forms lumps when in contact with liquid, thus making the clumped lumps easy to remove from the tray without having to change the entire lot. Hurrah! However, litter trays will still need to be completely emptied and cleaned now and again, usually at least once a month for a single cat household.

Some cats like a good clumping cat litter as it means they can avoid stepping in soiled areas of the litter tray, however other cats just can’t get along with the idea and would rather leave you a present behind the sofa. When choosing a cat litter based on clumping, make sure you take your cat’s opinion into account too!

Absorbency
Does your cat litter absorb urine, or does it pool in the bottom of the litter tray? Non-clumping cat litters absorb urine but they generally need to be cleaned more frequently than their clumping counterparts. If the litter tray isn’t cleaned frequently (at least weekly), it can turn into a smelly sludge. Nice. Which leads me nicely on to…

Odour Control
Does your litter tray smell like… a used litter tray, or does it still smell quite fresh after a few visits from your cat? Depending on your cat’s habits (and how many cats you have), the smell-factor could be very important when choosing the right cat litter for you.
