Shedding, moulting and loose hair around the home is something all pet owners have in common. From cats to dogs and furry rabbits in between many of our four legged family friends add the home décor by leaving their fluff lying around.
Shedding is a normal process for many pets. Shedding is triggered by seasonal differences in temperature, day length and natural light.
At certain times of the year, dogs, cats and rabbits (to name but a few) respond to these changes by growing a thick winter coat when the temperature drops and the days become shorter, or shedding their under coat during the spring when it becomes warmer and the days longer.
Many modern family pets spend a lot of their time indoors, which means they are exposed to temperature fluctuations much more than the natural seasonal routine and this can often cause year round shedding.
But how can you help reduce shedding?
There are many things, that as owners we can do to help our pets coats. By keeping their coats in great condition it can help reduce the amount they shed and reduce to fluff around our homes.
Heres a top tips of ways we can support our pets and their coats:
- A change in diet can be very beneficial in reducing the shedding problem; the skin needs oils to keep the hair follicles healthy, otherwise the hair can become brittle and fall out.
Foods that are free of wheat gluten, beef and dairy products are preferable because these ingredients are known to contribute to excessive shedding caused by allergies. We recommend MORE, Symply, Canagan, Piccolo and McAdams because they contain none of those pesky ingredients, but do include a high meat content and good quality oils for the much needed fatty acids – Omegas 3 and 6 to keep those hair follicles and coat healthy.
- Good quality grooming tools also make a world of difference. Pets Corner stocks a whole range of grooming tools to help give our pets that shiny glossy coat we all want to see. One of our favourites is the FurFixer, from Great & Small. The Furfixer is an amazing piece of equipment that effortlessly removes loose and shed fur from the undercoat. Unlike many professional grooming tools on the market the Furfixer has been ergonomically designed with users in mind. Making grooming a pleasure both owner and pet. The stainless steel glides through the top coat without snagging or pulling and is designed for use on dogs, cats and rabbits.
Why is grooming so important?
As well as helping to keep your pet looking beautiful, regular grooming allows you to spend quality bonding time with your pet, and gives the opportunity to check their body condition and spot any unusual signs of health problems, such as lumps or bumps.
Regular grooming to can help to improve muscle tone and skin condition. By stimulating blood circulation and improving the skin natural oil abilities.
Grooming is also important for the reduction of the buildup of hairballs in rabbits and cats. Being self-groomers, they like to keep themselves spotlessly clean and smart. But during this process loose and shed hair is often ingested, which puts them at risk of hairball formation. By grooming them regularly with a grooming tool like the Furfixer you can help reduce not only shedding but also the risk of hairballs.
